Just about two days ago I have conducted an experiment in which I have created my own mesocosm. This is a controlled mini environment contained in a tightly sealed jar. The aim of the experiment was to sustain the key conditions needed for the survival and independent growth of seeds and a cutting of a cactus.
I have recreated natural soils in the jar. The first layer was charcoal, then a thin layer of sand, and lastly some black earth or chernozem. Then I have selected some seeds and separated some cactus cuttings, and planted them into the earth.
Then I watered it slightly and sealed the jar with a lid and tape so that the new ecosystem is isolated from our environment.
Looking forward to the ecosystem thriving in the little jar.
